Celtic Knot Generation Script

As a personal project, I wrote a script that adds the functionality in Blender to generate a non-arbitrary weaving three-dimensional celtic knot from a base mesh, tailored to user specifications. Code available at github.com/tbornottb/CelticKnotAddon.

BeforeAfter

Family Locational Clock

Inpired by the Weasley family clock in the Harry Potter books and movies, I used a Particle Photon and the If This Then That to create a digital abstraction of a magical device. The board controls a string of 50 LEDs, housed in a body constructed from a clock bought from an antique store, combined with lasercut wood and acrylic. Family members use the IF app (linking the Android or iOS Location channel to the Particle channel) to define radii that when entered or exited send messages to the Photon, changing the position of their clock hand. Other channels can be used as well - for example, through the Weather channel on IFTTT, a rule can be created that sets the user's status to HOLIDAY whenever snow is in the forecast for their city. Code available here.

Camera Tracking/SFX

Using Blender's camera tracking functionality and by creating an environment map from photographs for reflection and lighting, I integrated a digital object into a video.

Character Renders

Customizable Cryptex

Original design and model. Created using a 3D printer, a ShopBot, and an Epilog laser engraver. Allows for anyone who can unlock it to reorder and rotate the rings, thereby changing the password. Evolutionary algorithm used to find the optimal distribution of letters across the 6 rings, allowing the most possible 6-letter passwords.

Contest Entry CG Short

Solo animation project - original concept, models, materials, recordings.

Commissioned 3D Printed Lanterns

I was tasked with designing and 3D printing twenty-five lanterns for a gala event celebrating the 75th anniversary of Duke's Pratt School of Engineering. I collaborated with event coordinators on designs and dimensions, and utilized online 3D printing services to help distribute the workload.

Commissioned 3D Printed Brooch

Modelled a brooch based on a design spec and had it printed in metal for a fashion show in New York.

Compex Shape/Material Render

Practical Invention CAD

A device of my own design, the Keyper. It adheres to the front of a light switch and only allows the light to be turned on by the insertion and turning of a room key. Compatible for roommates, if either or both of the keys are inserted, the lights are on, and if both are removed, the lights are off. This was created to encourage people to not leave the lights on when leaving the room, as students take their room key with them.

Architectural Modeling

This is an accurate model of the non-extant French chateau at Folembray, created using historical drawings and research into extant contemporaneous buildings.

Wearables

These pieces, among others, were modeled for the fashion magazine FORM, to demonstrate the breadth of the applications of 3D printing and to bridge the fields of technology and art. All the pieces shown here were printed.

Color Model for Printing

A three-dimensional character created from an image. Model is watertight and all thicknesses are print-safe. It has been fully UV-unwrapped, so all color data is printable. Printed in colored sandstone.
